Choose Server 2025 if…

Choose Server 2022 if…

Choose Server 2019 if…
You need legacy application compatibility, have existing servers running 2019 and want to expand, or need the Essentials edition (no CALs required, up to 25 users). Extended support until 2029.
Choose Server 2016 or 2012 R2 if…
Your specific software or hardware is only compatible with these versions, or you need an affordable licence for a test/development environment. Note that 2012 R2 no longer has standard Microsoft support.
What are CALs and when do you need them?
A CAL (Client Access License) authorises a user or device to connect to a Windows Server Standard or Datacenter server. It's not software — it's a legal access right. The Essentials edition doesn't require CALs (it already includes up to 25 users).
There are two types: User CAL (one per user, regardless of how many devices they use) and Device CAL (one per device, regardless of how many users share it). User CALs tend to be more cost-effective when each person uses multiple devices (laptop, phone, tablet). Device CALs are better when a computer is shared across shifts (factories, hospitals, classrooms).
RDS CALs (Remote Desktop Services) are required if users connect via Remote Desktop. They're separate from regular CALs — you need both. At Revolution Soft we sell 50-pack RDS CALs from €165.

Do I need CALs with Windows Server?
Yes, for Standard and Datacenter editions you need a CAL per user or device connecting to the server. The only exception is Essentials, which includes access for up to 25 users without additional CALs. If you use Remote Desktop (RDP), you also need separate RDS CALs.
What's the difference between Standard and Datacenter?
The main difference is virtualisation: Standard allows up to 2 Windows Server VMs (with Hyper-V), while Datacenter allows unlimited VMs. Datacenter also includes advanced features like Shielded VMs, Storage Spaces Direct and Software-Defined Networking. If you only need 1-2 VMs, Standard is sufficient and more affordable.
How many cores does each licence cover?
