SQL Server CALs (Client Access Licences)
If you prefer the Server+CAL licensing model (base server licence + one CAL per user or device accessing the server), you will need individual CALs. This model is usually more economical when the number of users is small (fewer than ~20). Available as User CAL (one per person, access from any device) or Device CAL (one per machine, used by multiple people).

Quick rule: if your server has 24 cores or fewer, 128 GB RAM, and you don't need full Always On AG, the Standard edition is sufficient. If you need advanced high availability, unlimited RAM or more than 24 cores, choose Enterprise.
Per-core or Server+CAL? Licensing models
Per-core (recommended)
One licence covers all users accessing the server. No additional CALs required. The simplest and most cost-effective model if you have more than 20 users or if the server is internet-facing (web apps, APIs).

Server + CAL
You buy a base server licence + one CAL per user or device that accesses the server. Can be cheaper with few users (fewer than ~20). Not valid if the server is public-facing.

How much does a SQL Server licence cost?
At Revolution Soft, SQL Server Standard licences start at €690 (2016) and go up to €1,590 (2025). Enterprise licences range from €1,290 to €1,890. The official Microsoft price for SQL Server 2022 Standard (Server+CAL model) exceeds €3,586.
Do per-core licences include CALs?
They don't need CALs. Per-core licences (all our Standard and Enterprise) include unlimited users. You only need CALs if you choose the Server+CAL licensing model.
Are these licences legal?
Yes. These are surplus software licences sold under the CJEU Ruling C-128/11, which recognises the right to resell digital software within the EU. Valid for Microsoft audits, public administration and any business. Revolution Soft is a Spanish registered company (S.L.) issuing VAT invoices.
Can I install SQL Server on Linux?
Yes, from SQL Server 2017 onwards. Compatible with Windows Server 2022/2019 and Linux distributions (RHEL, Ubuntu Server, SLES). The same key works on both platforms.
Can I migrate between versions?
Yes. SQL Server supports in-place upgrades between consecutive versions (2017→2019→2022). You can also use backup/restore or Microsoft's Database Migration Assistant (DMA).
Do I need Windows Server to install SQL Server?
If installing on Windows, you need a Windows Server licence (Standard or Datacenter). We offer Windows Server 2022 Standard from €249. If installing on Linux, no additional OS licence is needed.
